Digital voice recorders provide great solutions for voice recognition applications, however background noise will sometimes cause a problem.
The ME-12 plugs into your digital recorder's 3.5mm microphone jack for uni-directional recording in high-noise environments. It will cut down on much of the background noise and result in a more accurate transcription.

Worthless when plugged into an Olympus VN-702PC digital recorder. I was hoping for a more sensitive and perhaps more directional pick-up. The ME-12 provides neither. In fact, the built-in mic on the recorder was at least twice as effective as this piece of wishful thinking. The only noise it cancelled was the recording sound level. Although the Olympus recorder is excellent itself, I have begun some serious interviews and nature recordings, each of which needed a more critical recording device. I ended up buying a Zoom H2n. I got it used in an on-line auction. It records in 4 channel but has an option that mixes down to stereo. The sound and spatial quality is astounding, especially for something the size of an electric shaver. If you want quality recordings, pass on this gimmick and spend the money for something that will provide archival digital sound. Your time is valuable and a top quality recording is worth the investment.
This little microphone works well for me. I've owned it since August and now it's November 3. I use it with my Olympus WS-100 to take notes which I then save to my computer and import it into Dragon Naturally Speaking version 9 Preferred which then produces a Microsoft Word document. I speak into the microphone from about 2 inches away and am really careful with my diction and pronunciation because there is just a little bit of distortion if you over drive it. But with a little work in practice it does what it's supposed to do. Oh, one side note if you do import this into Dragon be aware you will have to make corrections. Sometimes a lot of them but that's based on how you speak. Or maybe that's based on how I speak that's been my experience anyway. But that's not the fault of the microphone.
at least not all smart phones. i use a Samsung Note 4 and its a no go. from what I've learned unless the headphone plug has 3 rings like what you see on your typical headphones with a mic, it's not compatible. I am not certain. but I am very sure that this won't work with the phone i have.
as far as the mic itself goes, it will work great in a recorder and is a solid buy.

I tried this on my iPhone 4S to see if it would make a difference. While it didn't improve the sound much (if at all) the windscreen really helps with windy situations. For the cheap price that alone is a good reason to have this mic if you record outside at all.
I did not notice any noise-canceling effect. I recorded in a quiet room with my computer humming in the background and the hum was just as audible with and without the external mic.
Better for interviews than the built-in mic on Olympus voice recorders. I have the WS-320M recorder. The ME-12 mic is not as sensitive as the built-in, though. The ME-12 is at its best when dictating, and not as good when recording a lecture from far away.
Works great with an extension cable, and is especially good for recording live interviews. You can move the mic where you want it depending on who's speaking.
