Raised in isolation, La'tiera has been coddled and secluded, her mission too important to risk anything happening to her. The Herald-a harbinger comet--has appeared in the sky, telling all the Time of Trial is near. She is ready to do as her duty requires, though the very world she will die to preserve is one she will never see. Dal has led a free life, serving the Order established centuries ago to find and instruct the Bearer in how to perform the Trial established by the covenant made between the Four Gods and the Demons who seek to take over his world. Yet as the latest Trial approaches, there has been no news of the Bearer. The Order is worried.? A lively child draws these two together. La'tiera is elated at seeing a person or two from the outside, even as she worries her selfish desire for companionship might put all in jeopardy. Suspicion then arises on both sides, as what she has been taught and what Dal knows to be true are widely different. La'tiera knows the truth-she is the sacrifice that will save the world, no matter who says it should be otherwise. Her task has always been clear. She will not be swayed from her course. But Dal knows her death will open their world to the savage Demons-the exact opposite of what she has been told. He must find a way to get her to accept this before it is too late. But can he? Her very dedication and stubbornness might just doom their world to destruction. Let the battle of wills begin.

Really, it's the little things, the attention to detail, that make this such a wonderful book. All the little things we take for granted, La'tiera has been denied, and so when she discovers them she is completely fascinated by the every day.
The progression from what she's been taught to what is true is a believable one; La'tiera is intelligent, yet she's also loyal and not easily swayed from what she believes is the right thing to do. The way she thinks and progresses, the events that shape her decisions, are all completely believable within the context of the story, which is very important for a story of this nature.
And La'tiera's reactions at the end are also spot-on for a real person in her situation.
Gloria Oliver has done it again, and with as much talent and style as ever.
However, one little girl from a traveling troupe of entertainers discovers a way inside the fortress. She meets La'tiera and tells her troupe all about her. Could she be the one they have been searching for? Without hesitation, other members of the group believe that she's the girl who will save the world.
The group kidnaps La'tiera for her own safety. They speak of anther solution besides sacrifice, where La'tiera must live in order to save mankind, rather than die. As much as La'tiera grows to love her friend and admire the people around her, she knows what she must do.
Who is telling her the truth -- and can she figure out her destiny before it's too late?
WILLING SACRIFICE is a unique tale that fantasy readers will certainly enjoy.
