Totally destroyed Mahabharata

This is such a disaster. I do not recommend buying this book. They've taken such a great and huge story and setting and made a total joke out of it. The only saving grace are the illustrations. Grant Morrison clearly doesn't understand Bhartiya literature (I don't blame him). Not recommended at all. They've put in the work but they have no understanding of what they were attempting to create here.

The Mahabharata reimagined, Morrisonian style!

No two ways about it, this book is absolutely stunning. The first thing that jumps out at you are the visuals; I admit to being an absolute sucker for design diaries and -sketches, and this book provides the stuff. There's plenty of finished art, of course, and it works beautifully (although some have claimed that the computerized coloring robs the linework of some of its' power, I did not find this to be the case at all), but for me personally it is the barebones sketches that comes off as most exciting and vibrant.
Once I'd digested the visuals (which took some several flip-throughs), there's Morrison's design diaries and notes to dig into. This is no less exciting, as the man is an exciting visionary and reinventor - he knows his mythology and his archetypes. Supposedly a treatment for the basic setup and first three episodes of an animated series "still in production", I haven't managed to find any solid information on whether it is languishing in preproduction hell or if work is actually coming along. In some ways, it might be even more exciting like this - unfettered ideas, possibilities positively exploding out of the text. The notes echoes the hyperstructure of the planned narrative.
All in all, it is a ridiculous bargain at this price. I will treasure this book.

Buy it for the art

I read enough of this to get an idea of what was going on and then just flipped through it and drooled over the art. The concept is amazing and would make such an incredible movie or series, especially if the art was done by the same artist.
Unfortunately reading it is a little boring. It's like a storyboard, instead of a script. But it sounds like it never got picked up and funded. Does Mr. Morrison know about kickstarter.com? I feel like he could put this out and get enough cash to make something happen.

Visually stunning, but academically not so much.

I'm about two thirds of the way through the Mahabharata. I'm long past the end of the war and well into Bhishma's lectures on his deathbed.
I give Grant credit for the attempt. The Mahabharata is an enormous story with innumerable versions many of which are irreconcilable.
I give Grant more credit for getting the fundamentals of the story basically ok. There are a lot of details I grimaced at, such as comparing Krishna to Kato but he is re-packaging the story for Western audiences who are not academics and are likely looking for some common ground.
The visuals are nothing short of amazing. His interpretations of the Gandiva, Arjuna's Hanuman flag and the brahmastras are very interesting.
Some of the visuals threw me. Rakshasas as were-dinosaurs? Blond Pandavas? Krishna as an elf?
Still, I am looking forward to the release of the videos and will likely enjoy them.

This is my first experience with looking at what is essentially a project sketch. The hardbound book is basically a collection of notes and drawings that attempt to flesh out the true scale of what Grant Morrison is attempting in his retelling of the Mahabharata.
Once you get over the initial disappointment of it being merely an idea-pad and not quite a complete story, you can then focus on what you can get out of it. This is where truly the level of imagination and thought processes that go into the making of such a graphic novel hit you.
You will see little text snippets of dialogue, and perhaps the reading will feel a lot like reading a film script. (Not surprising since this was hypothetically being pitched as an animated project). Meanwhile the artwork around the scene fills the pages with rich colour and detail.
The artwork is simply spectacular and very very in keeping with the tone of Morrison's ideas. He has sketched out the Panavas and Kauravas as celestial warriors with their own unique armor et al. Mukesh Singh's artwork alone is enough to make this a book you'll keep returning to often. I'd be curious to see if there are posters of his artwork available.
All in all, this book is NOT a completed graphic novel. It's a sketchbook meant to detail a work in progress. However the scale of it makes you quite eager to see the final product for yourself. Would at the very least, make a top notch coffee table book to flip through at leisure.
