I had to rate this book highly after the other reviewer gave it such a low rating without any reference to his/her art background. I have a limited background, but a good support system to help me understand and grow which affects how I use and rate books. I've actually sold a few things which has pleasantly surprised me. I find this book exciting.
I find there are some very interesting ideas in this book that compliment books on nature printing such as: 1) Naturescapes: An Approach To Ecology Through Art by Madeleine Carol Miller, 2) Natural Impressions: Taking an Artistic Path Through Nature by Carol A. Dahl, 3) Nature Printing With Herbs, Fruits & Flowers by Laura Donnelly Bethmann (be careful, it's only one book but there are 2 covers of this one so you could get tricked into buying 2 copies like others have been), Nature Printing by Ogden Nature Center/Nature Printing Society as well as nice adjunct to Sponge Painting Fast & Fun Techniques for Creating Beautiful Art which is also by Terrence Tse.
In all cases, these techniques can produce awful art or amazing art dpending on who's doing it (as with pasterls, oils, etc). The techniques in these books are in essence a special subset of mixed media art that have been around a lot longer than the term mixed media - some for many centuries whereas others use high tech modern techniques.
I'm struggling to make "good" art based on the whole nature printing style, and I'm not there yet, but when you start anything new, you aren't going to be a master of it. Most people don't make art of a quality that others want to buy it. For most of us, creating art is about the journey, not the destination. I'd love to get up to the level of any of the authors I mentioned. I ordered this book because I love the dreaminess of his style.
I think the nature printing is a great area not only for individuals but for family activities. My granddaughter loves when we "do art" during visits. You can use a lot of stuff from the yard, from your scrap piles and from walks in doing this type of art. Kids love to pick stuff up, and now they can make it into something cool.
Another style which is also interpretive nature themed is in the two books by Maxine Masterfield: 1) In Harmony with Nature: Painting Techniques for the New Age and 2) Painting the Spirit of Nature. Even if you don't do it, it's really great to read what she's all about.
If you have no art background, be patient with what's in this book if you like the look of his paintings. You can do it if you give it time. Try and find some short sample classes at community colleges or your local art center or craft stores to build some basic skills and confidence. Check out some basic theory books from the library and see what's involved in creating simple art. I wish the other reviewer had said something about his/her experiences that explained why his/her result was so bad. I keep wondering, did you give up too quickly?
