ZOLA'S BEST BY FAR2019年4月5日 - 已在美国亚马逊上发表
Fabulous, even after the umpteenth read, hard copy or kindle, French, German or English. This harrowing tale of human sufferings, the beast within, the uncaring universe thst smothers all, especially the most delicate stirrings of love ir compassion, still makes my blood run cold! Better than any murder mystery or thriller Zola paints the picture of a true environment, where real people had to live, love hate, fight for survival, where his story could actually have happened! After immersing myself in the Germinal yet again, I am aways relieved to find I live here and now and not then!
The Struggles of the Worker2015年11月23日 - 已在美国亚马逊上发表
Germinal tells the story of the struggle of mineworkers in 19th century France for improved working conditions and for basic respect. It does this through word painting in graphic detail of the homes in which they lived, the poverty of their daily fare, their social life and the fact that they had accepted the fact that they would live and die in the coal mines as their fathers and mothers did and as their children would. Zola gives the reader a deeply textured grip of the life of the poor in France in contrast to the lifestyle of the owners. In Germinal, he provided an inkling of hope when Etienne Lantier arrived on the scene and tried to mobilize the workers to strike against a move to cheat them of their wages. In the teeth of doubt and fear, he succeeded in mobilizing the workers but in the end they found themselves unequal to the power of the rich and the support they had from the powers that be including the police and the army. It was striking that, once the cries for strike started, women played a major role in instigating action and were marching step by step with men to demand change. In the end, the mine owners forced them into a choice between striking and starving. Faced with children dying of hunger, sons and daughters dying from violence, they yielded and returned to work, cowed, beaten, mourning their losses. .. but the seed of protest was sown. One gets the sense that it would flower again.
Very good read. Surprisingly shows how even though things change there is always an under current that remains the same.2018年6月21日 - 已在美国亚马逊上发表
Very gpod read. Surprisingly shows how even though things change with time there is an under current beneath that keeps pulling at one and somethings remain the same. Man will continue his fight against injustice until he no longer breaths.
Not Bilingual as advertised.2019年7月15日 - 已在美国亚马逊上发表
Bought Germinal by Zola as a bilingual edition as it was advertised. Received Germinal in English only! Very annoying. Would return it, but it has become a pain in the neck.
