Beatrix's life was a fairytail

Her life was amazing. I could only dream of living in such affluent lifestyle and have all the resources to achieve that type of success. This book was a pleasure to read. I admire and appreciate her and all the stories she wrote even more. Fabulous book !! Loved all the illustrations!! The large size of book and print, layout of pages and captions made it easy to understand and a thrill to read.

Not what I was expecting

I was honestly hoping for much more from this book, more original illustrations in particular, especially of her beloved woodland creatures. Unfortunately for me, most of the watercolor paintings that were selected for this book were of landscape paintings :-( The major focus of this book is on Beatrix as a botantist, sadly, again, for me, as I was particular interested in learning from her sketches, drawings and paintings of animals which were few and far between in this volume. This is a nice history of her life painted in broad brush strokes with a few personal photos of her and her family as well, however, if you've seen the movie, you more or less will know all of this already. The book title should have read, "The Art of Beatrix Potter: Sketches and paintings of mushrooms, plants, and landscapes of the English countryside where she vacationed and lived." There is far too little attention given to her storybook friends in this book, such a disappointment, as that is what we love best about this famous children's author/illustrator. The few illustrations and paintings in there of these little fictional characters are breathtaking and absolutely brilliant in showing them with personalities, moods and feelings while looking rather lifelike with the exception of the adorable clothes. There is definitely room in the publishing world for a follow up book that pays homage to her story book characters with original illustrations, sketches, field studies, and paintings.
