While Swale was a great racehorse, and his premature death was a loss to the racing and breeding industry, this book is so filled with errors it is not worth the time or the money. One such error is that Slew O' Gold was the only horse to win the Jockey Club Gold Cup twice. The author was obviously unaware that Kelso had won the same race 5 years in succession. There are many other inaccuracies that would make the list as long as the book itself. It seems the author wrote this book for people who had never been to the races or had even seen one on television. It should be listed as a work of fiction.
One of the best horse racing books ever!2014年11月29日 - 已在美国亚马逊上发表

I did not know this story. Everybody know Seattle Slew. After he retired from racing he sired 117 stakes winning horses. One of which was Swale. Who won 9 of 14 career races including the Kentucky Derby and the Belmont and only finished out of the money once. A great horse in his own right. It is what happened after the Belmont though. With his handlers taking him out of his stall one morning he basically fell over dead. This is a pretty good book that goes into a lot of his life on and off the race track.
SWALE WOULD BE PROUD OF THIS BOOK!2007年5月3日 - 已在美国亚马逊上发表
Every once in awhile, a book comes along that captures the readers' imagination. GRIT AND VALOR: THE STORY OF SWALE is one such book. Back in 1984, SWALE, the son of the legendary and immortal SEATTLE SLEW, stormed to victory in three of the most significant Grade 1 races in the history of horse racing, the Florida Derby, the Kentucky Derby, and the Belmont Stakes. Then, tragically, just eight days after his dominating victory at the 110th running of the Belmont Stakes, SWALE died of a rare heart ailment. This ruined his chance at greatness, and caused him to be almost forgotten in history. This is not the case anymore, however. Thanks to this wonderful book, SWALE is brought back to life once more. Every aspect and detail of his life is examined thoroughly in a very dynamic and thought provoking way. In fact, there are fourteen chapters alone devoted specifically to each one of SWALE'S fourteen races. And these races are not just glossed over either. The reader is taken through step by step practically every 1/8 of a mile, right through to the finish line. It is incredibly compelling! In addition, the author went out of his way to provide the reader with a foreward section that states why he became so intrigued by the sport of thoroughbred horse racing, as well as an index that contains every major and minor aspect talked about throughout the book. This is one of the most refreshing aspects of the book itself, because I have never been a big fan of a book lacking an index. I have read William Nack's book about Secretariat, and Laura Hillenbrand's book about Seabiscuit, and I must declare unequivically, that GRIT AND VALOR: THE STORY OF SWALE ranks right up there with both of them. It is a great tribute to a great and forgotten thoroughbred. SWALE would love this book very much. It has done him proud-very proud.
