Philip Augustus is one of the few kings that can easily be said to be a direct cause of such a huge change in not only his country or kingdom, but of several countries and kingdoms. Indeed France became the power it was because of what Philip was able to achieve at the hands of the Plantagenet's and of the HRE. Bradbury does a wonderful job bringing to life this important king.
Bradbury brings to life virtually every aspect of Philip's life, down to how his administration was organized, to the more momentous and action packed battles to secure his demesne. His writing is succinct and clear, never allowing himself to be duped by the flattering accounts of chroniclers or of the rumors and tales. In fact he even tells you what was said and in the same sentence tell you why and how that rumor or tale started and what it says about how the public thought of him.
On the flip side at times Bradbury seems a little biased. He seems to dislike the Plantagenet's or look down on them, while at the same time putting Philip on a pedestal. Richard, to Bradbury, was over rated and didn't really accomplish what history says he did. Granted, maybe this revisionist style of writing has some ground in truth, but it is strange to see how easy he lowered the image of all of Philip's opponents.
That being said, this is most certainly a must read for Medieval Europe fans. Philip changed the face of Europe and made France the power that it was, and this biography certainly does it justice. I am surprised at how little biographies there are of this French king, but this one is one that is worth reading. Definite recommend.
