I bought this book on a trip to Australia from the United States. My visit to Canberra was relatively short, but I was able to observe quite a bit of the city's landmark buildings, including the new Parliament building.
Canberra is, more than anything else, planned and modern. While the basic layout of the city was designed by American landscape architect Griffin, all the wonderful modern buildings were designed by many important modern architects.
I prefer classical architecture to modern, so you know I have a bias right away, but I have to admit that Canberra is an example of really good modern architecture. The buildings are not just new, but are interesting too. This book features both Canberra's few remaining classical buildings and its impressive collection of modern ones.
Really, this is an excellent book. The way it's organized by building, how it includes excellent color photography, floor plans, elevations, and meaning historical content all make it a standard for this type of guidebook. These guides published in Australia by Watermark Press are of very high quality.
I would recommend this book for architectural historians and serious cultural tourists. Don't spend too much, because this is not a big coffee table book. It's a small reference book.
