Marred by combination of type and paper

10/12 Minion on laid paper that is more transparent than it should be was not a great choice. This is the first book in a long while to make me go hunting for reading glasses. The transparency of the paper, the watermark lines, and the general layout combine to create strange variations in contrast that make reading difficult.
Bringhurst says (on page 195) that "The type cannot be chosen without coming to some decision about the kind of paper it will be printed on, and cannot look right in the end if that decision is later betrayed." His example is about proportions, but transparency and style ask similar questions. Perhaps he was betrayed in this printing?
The book is mostly great, despite a strange lack of history around spaces and punctuation, and occasional hectoring, but an unreadable typography book is a sad thing. (I have version 4.2 (2016).)

Version 4.3

I just bought the paperback version. It is version 4.3 and is longer than previous versions. The paper doesn't have the thinness problem reported about version 4.2. From the images, it seems the hardback version is only 4.0. I recommend purchase of the 4.3 paperback version of this book.

The only book you will ever need on typography!

This is an absolutely fantastic book about the history and practice of typography. I love it so much this is the second copy I’ve purchased so I can have one at home and one in my office at work. It is well-written, fascinating, well-researched, and offers deep insights into improving the typography and readability of any document you create.
Using the techniques outlined in this book I have been able to create professional documents that are more persuasive in a business setting because they look nice and are easy to read. After reading this book you will begin to notice the impact of typography all around you and take notice of how you can make better documents.

Interesting content, visually tiring

It's ironic that this book, which is about the arcane subject of the importance of visuals, is so unattractive in its lay-out, font and even positioning on the page. It was recommended to me by a friend whose taste I respect, but reading it has been slow going specifically because of the book's visual impact. It's actually tiring.

They call it "Elements" for a good reason.

This book is really informative for those getting into the typographic business, demonstrating good ettiquette in the myriad niceties involved (even in the matter of page size and layout). There's also a handy index for extended characters for type designers, especially the Cyrillic italics which can be obtuse for those used to Latin regularity. The only downside is that it's a bit dated in the face of new font technology. Otherwise, definitely a must-have for graphic designers!
