I wanted this graphic novel for my granddaughter who is a budding artist now building an online presence. I greatly admired the spirit and skills of the artist-author and hoped to show Maddie a different purpose for which art can be used. Unfortunately, the content and the art is much too dark for a spirit as gentle as Maddie's, barely 16 and empathetic to an extreme. It's too much for someone like her even without knowing that the author did not survive her cancer, dying at 23. (This fact is not revealed in the book). She did manage to graduate college in fashion design, and to establish some success in that field. In spite of being disfigured and growing weaker, she also accumulated friends who admired her spirit and abilities.
Perhaps I will give the book to Maddie in a few years. For now it makes a unique addition to my own collection of graphic novels and gives me a different sort of insight into courage and the inevitability of death.
