One side has the "fold out" or full-page version, while the view across the page contains the "fold-in" version. I like to cover up the fold in version while reading a scrutinizing the full page version, then reveal the fold in to see how close I came. These are like a walk through history as Al Jaffee covers all the top news stories of the 60's and on through 2010.

I bought this for my son for Christmas. He loves MAD Magazine just like I did when I was a kid, and he really loves the fold-outs. When I saw how nice the binding was, I winced, because I could just see him folding them all and ruining the presentation of these fabulous books. AHHH -- when you open them up, you do not need to fold anything! On the left page is the unfolded version, and then on the right page is the folded version artwork, presented with no seams. You can look through each one and never have to line up the arrows yourself. I had no idea these were all done by one man all these years. It is fascinating to see how the artwork styles and subject matters change with the times as the decades change. These have sparked so many discussions with my son -- about political and social issues brought up by these "cartoons" that this has been invaluable. I know my son will have this on his shelf when he is my age.

Al Jaffee's fold in have been a part of Mad magazine for fifty years. This retrospective contains them all. Produced side by side are reproductions of the original artwork and its solution do there is no need to mar your own copies. If you grew up at all during the last half decades the odds are very great that at some point in your life you folded the back cover of Mad to see the genius of Al Jaffee in full flower. What is most surprising is how timely some of these fold in still are. Block buster films, video games, sports figures, and politics move in cycles and resonate years later in amazing ways. An all encompassing collection you will be at turns laughing along with Al Jaffee and then marveling at his ingenuity. A one of a kind artists gets the one of a kind treatment he deserves. Not to be missed.
