I was worried that no ending could do this series justice. Went so far as to slow down my reading because I was sure I would be disappointed. There was simply no way the buildup of the last 6 books and now this seventh could be capped off with any ending I could think of. Yet Stephen King pulled that off, proved me wrong.
This ending took King some 20-30 years to get written, but it was worth it. If, like Roland, you make it this far, just know you'll reach the end knowing that Ka is a wheel that turns, the story will do you fine.
I was sucked in by King's efforts to bring us a multi-verse filled with all the adventures and all the characters he cast. Sucked in enough to buy books two at a time because I didn't want to stop reading. What he accomplished was amazing and this is a series I will definitely re-read after my siblings finish them. If you are on the fence about dropping a few bucks for these books, know that they are worth every penny.
Seriously, what am I going to read now? I read a lot of King as a teenager, read The Stand multiple times. Eventually I stopped, because I lost my taste for horror tales. Then I picked up Cell, just to see whether I could rekindle my relationship with King. But it felt flat, easy, gimmicky and cheap. But there's something else, people said, The Dark Tower. I tried, and was disappointed at the lack of a conclusion at the end of Volume I. I went on to read other things.
Then there was talk of a movie, and how they had stuffed different parts into one film... I decided that I owed it to my younger self to read the whole cycle before watching the film, and that became my reading challenge for 2017.
With the terrific reading by George Guidall in the Audible version, I found myself carried along into a complex world entirely of King's making, laughing, crying with Roland's ka-tet. And in the end, I have to say that this is King's masterpiece, the crown on a body of work that defined much of my childhood and, now, my adulthood.
So whence from here? I have read the best that King had to offer, and terrific it was. I may have to leave him here, so that this is my lasting impression of him, not to be spoiled by mediocrity.
Okay, maybe I will read The Stand one more time if they ever get round to doing another TV version.
The last book if the series is arguably its best. I always appreciated that the loose ends were tied adequately. For me that was important at the time and I found it satisfying again. This last story is full of the twists and turns you come to expect as you journey to the tower. It is final and at time pulls hard on the heart.
This is a great read. A great way to finish the epic story of Roland and the quest for the Dark Tower.
