I am a huge fan of Catherine Friend, her memoirs and THE PERFECT NEST, so I was really looking forward to BARN BOOT BLUES. I was not disappointed, but felt there were some gaps that her editor should have pointed out. The beginning is good, plop us right down into Taylor's "discombobulated" world, but go back and give more background information on how this decision by her parents came about. It's her mother's dream to farm, but why? Dad doesn't seem to be totally on board. I want to know more about Florence before the spinning chapter. It's a little one dimensional. I love all the characters, especially Caleigh, a true friend who comes through for Taylor. I want a sequel with Taylor and Caleigh showing their animals at the State Fair. (You heard it here!)
I think this book is very timely with the push toward small, self-sustaining farms, back to basics, etc. I have recommended this book to the Agriculture teacher at my middle school. It gives a realistic look at farming, the joys as well as the dark times when beloved animals are lost.
Having read SHEEPISH, I love how Friend put her knowledge of sheep and spinning into the book. The ending was just perfect. I would recommend this to my 6th and 7th grade girls and would read it aloud to all of my middle schoolers.
If you haven't read her picture book, THE PERFECT NEST, you simply MUST.
