This book is a delight to read. If you love the history of the famous and obscure inventors and entrepreneurs of the late 1800's and early 1900's, you'll love this book.
A handful of facts really stood out to me. First, the size of the cable. I don't know why, but I've always imagined how large this cable was. I was totally wrong. Second, the beginning of this quest is decades earlier than I thought it would be. I didn't realize how much had to wait for specific other technologies to advance before this "obvious" idea could become a reality.
My favorite line in the book is about two companies that worked on this project but kept absolutely no records about what they did. How is that possible? Cookson observes: "As failure cost them nothing, they had no immediate incentive to develop better procedures."
In your organization, is failure significant or meaningless? How does that affect your behavior?
