I've read all thirty five books in this series, enjoying some more than others. I suspect that this may be the last in the series as the author planned to take it up to the beginning World War II. Some of the things that happened in this book seemed far to convenient...as though certain things needed convenient closure. However, I have been wondering about the black pearls ever since one of the heroines hid them in the wall of the chapel. I've been waiting for them to be found! As she was writing one book a year, this must be the last.
Good to visit with old friends2013年10月19日 - 已在美国亚马逊上发表
If you've been immersed in this long running series, then references back to old characters in earlier books may, as it did for me, bring a smile to your face. In this book, for example, our famous plastic sergeon, repairer of fire and other disfigurements, finds himself working in a hospital that is spoken of pejoratively as a "beauty hospital". Readers of the series will remember that "Beauty" was the moniker of his well loved and powerful father. I enjoyed greatly Cyntia Harrod-Eagles keeping alive, in direct and oblique ways, major characters from earlier books. And, of course, keeping the theme of Morland Place forever: as it expands and contracts, has different masters, workers and residents, as though it was a living entity, while different generations, some with greater success than others, pass through. As always, she draws her characters exceedingly well, making them multidimensional, and successfully sets them within the context of time and place. (Here, she creates characters within the context of the Great Depression.) She gives the story line sufficient turns to hold one's interest in the current book and sets the stage for you wanting to known what happens in the next book. I look forward to Book 36 as we move towards WW II and it's impact on the extended family of Morland Place.
Great fictional historical reading2018年6月27日 - 已在美国亚马逊上发表
I really enjoyed this very large historical series. This sadly is the last book in the series. The author has done an amazing amount of research starting from The War of the Roses in the 15th century to World War 1. You relive all the major events through history as it concerns the Morland family. Most books have a small amount of bedroom scenes so may be mores suited to adults,
Totally addictive books! Great historical novels!2013年11月7日 - 已在美国亚马逊上发表
I have all of the previous books and I anxiously await the next book to find out what is happening with the Morland family. I have even gotten my 87 year-old mother hooked on this series. The author does a wonderful job researching the historical era of each book, and I become totally mesmerized in the books. I usually try to hold off reading the books for when I am on vacation and I can read as long as I wish. These books are so difficult to put down. I am now waiting for the next book as I am addicted to Harrod-Eagles writing.
The final book in the series, so far!2015年2月5日 - 已在美国亚马逊上发表
Devastating, that this is the last book in the Series! (So far, at least). Ms. Harrod-Eagles is a wonderful storyteller and I became addicted to the Morland family story. I'm just hoping that the publisher will order several more books, as this one ended in the mid-1930's.
