What is a leader like? The elements are scattered around in the book. If the image of a leader had been painted in a more concentrated manner, it might be easier for the reader to have a clearer picture. But I think the articles were intended to be casual prose, so that’s ok.
Even so, one of the impressions I get is that a leader should be inspirational. An inferior had worked very hard for several months to get an order, her first order at that new company. She had to print the sales contract out to get signatures on it, at a time when one of the two printers that were available, one black-and-white, the other color, went wrong. Unfortunately, it was the black-and-white one that went wrong, which was considered cheaper in cost. She had no choice but to print the contract using the color printer. A few minutes later, she received the contract with signatures, and a sarcastic remark from the manager: “Wow, (it’s so precious to you) that you used the color printer to print it!” Yes, it was not easy winning your first contract after two or there months. But “A manger is inspirational”, and should it ring a bell? The manager was probably just a manger, not a leader.
Another thing that particularly struck me was a ten-year-old offering advice to a veteran. At a certain latitude and longitude in the world, a likely corporate scenario is that an older person will be ridiculed if they seek advice from or work under a younger person. Such a person is considered not capable. There an older person has to be wiser in the society’s eye and has to have achieved more in the society’s eye.
Some of the ideas contained in this book are refreshing, at least to me, and reading it can open eyes and offer new angles of looking at things. Recommended.
Other takeaways from the book: A leader of a tribe does not get permission, or follow rules, or wait to be asked - a leader just does it. A tribe follows that leader because the leader is passionate about what they are doing/creating and/or where they are going.
A tribe is not a "hierarchy" that is found in some companies with higher and higher levels of position. With a tribe, the more you want in, the more you are in.
I like that most of the topics are short and to the point. He doesn't ramble on. He gives you an idea and you take it from there. He doesn't give you a step by step manual on how to lead, he gives a concept of how tribes work and you as a leader work it out from there.
Super fun book. Joined his email list as greatly enjoy his daily emails on variety of thoughts.
