Old book, classic, outdated, but must be read by the person interested in the Navaho.2012年4月21日 - 已在美国亚马逊上发表
I bought my first copy of this book back in the 1960's when I paid $1.45 for it. You should also get his Navaho Witchcraft and also Marilyn Harris'es, Hatter Fox - among others. These books are significant to tell you about who the traditional Navaho, the Dine, are and mostly were! Since cultures and peoples values change all the time, well, maybe there's a few tribal groups still out there (in the Amazon and Peru) that change only wihtin their own spectrum of behavior, these books describe things that are pertinent only to the dates when they were written. Pavement, fast cars, fast food, fast drugs and encroaching white world, often the worst of it, has forced some radical changes. The language, Dine Bizaad is fading away and I'm glad to see it being taught and made available. Northern Arizona University has a course in it, with books and tapes (disks?) available. But unless the people were raised by their grandparents, todays Dine will lack the language and customs of the culture you read about in these books. But they should still be enjoyed, and especially read by the young Dine themselves so as to appreciate their past culture, the ways, of their people, their society. And be read by those anglos, et al who work on or near the reservation. The same is to be said of similar books about the Zuni. Add to these the novels by now passed, a'din, Tony Hillerman, who wrote The Thief Of Time, and you can learn some of the peoples practices of life. BUT, The Navaho is a classic, scholarly book, which tells you about chants/ways, the language, environment, how they deal with interpreters....Don't forget, 'The whiteman has headaches, the Dine have anthropologists!' My original, dog-earred copy even has my old red underlining in it! Ach'ooni, ei ya'at'ehh (forgive my spelling).
Still the Best!2010年4月9日 - 已在美国亚马逊上发表
Considering it was written so many decades ago, and also considering so much of what the Navajo Nation has experienced since WWII, Kluckhohn's "The Navaho" remains the best history of the Navajo people (as described by a non-Navajo). Modern students may yearn for an updating, but Kluckhohn did an excellent job of explaning the origin mythology, culture, and history of the Navajo, while also leaving us a valuable look at "the People" as they were in the 1930s and 1940s. Every serious student of the Southwest and Native American history should have a copy of this wonderful book.

I research what I write about and this book was excellent for research on the Navajo. I used the information that I found in this book for my fiction novella, Dark Night of the Navajo.

Classic well-written. Originally published in 1962. Gives a great sense of the historical impact of initial encounters with white people. Although some of the material is clearly outdated, it is well worthwhile the read to provide a nice solid foundation of understanding.
