It will also thrill you and chill you, sometimes make you laugh, and very often surprise you. It might even inspire you, though whether or not that is a good thing may depend on exactly what it inspires you to do!
What would it take to drive the average, mostly honest, mostly law abiding citizen to crime? What would it take to drive YOU? That is one of the questions explored in this remarkable novel, and even though I consider myself a Goody Two Shoes, I have to admit that if this happened to me, and if this opportunity presented itself, I WOULD be sorely tempted. The author does a magnificent job of portraying how a man repeatedly described as a "Boy Scout" by all who know him could be talked into, could talk himself into committing a felony and does another magnificent job of showing how it could be done with tools available to ordinary people.
Of course there is no such thing as a "perfect crime" as our hero learns to his sorrow, and chances are that by the time all the twists and turns and unknown unknowns are done and all the loose ends are neatly tied, even you will be shocked, though perhaps not as shocked as I was when I was shouting, "You dirty, rotten @#$%&!" at the author,...
with a big smile on my face.
Defects? Surprisingly few, given that this was a self-published novel. I didn't care for the title, an obscure euphemism that grated every time it was repeated, and it was repeated by almost every single character throughout. Another nit that will seem odd, perhaps even unfair for a self-published novel, was that in many places the dialog seemed almost too perfect, the sort of thing a real person thinks of two hours after the fact, when it's too late. I also have to argue that one of the political side effects he shows as springing from the events of this novel could not POSSIBLY happen the way he shows it happening. That's because while one of our two political parties could possibly be talked into it (many of its members openly support the cause now), most members of the other major political party would oppose it even with a gun to their heads, and since most journalists no longer even try to conceal their loyalty to the latter party, there is no way they would ever cover the story as the author shows them doing.
Still, these are very minor nits to pick. As I was reading it, I was wondering why some savvy publisher hadn't snapped this up, why some smart movie maker hadn't leaped on this potential blockbuster? But I think I know now...
If this novel had been published 4 or 5 years earlier (when it was first conceived) or if it was being published right now, it would perfectly fit its time, but in 2003, 2004 it just couldn't resonate the way it would now. Too bad, but with it being so perfectly poised to sell like hotcakes now, maybe this novel will finally get the audience it deserves.
One can only hope.
