The last three Christmas seasons, I have tried to read novels that had a Christmas theme. This year, I purchased the mystery, Wreck the Halls by Sarah Graves. While I think that Graves has the potential to be a good writer, Wreck the Halls had a number of issues that kept me from giving this novel no more than three stars. Wreck the Halls is part of Graves’ Home Repair mystery series.
Jacobia and her best friend, Ellie, visit their local butcher shop and find blood all over the place. The butcher is dead and his wife is in bed—asleep. Everyone seems to think that the butcher’s wife, Faye Anne, is the murderer, but Jacobia and Ellie set out to prove her innocence. There are a lot of strange things happening in Eastport, ME. And so there are many mysteries that need to be solved. In between, Jacobia is trying to rehab her old house with her new husband (her second). She is also trying to prepare for Christmas. Jacobia and Ellie are not private investigators, and so they can almost always be expected to do whatever it is that they shouldn’t—especially if it’s going to place them in danger. There were also subplots that don’t add anything to story. Who cares about the dog who is spooked by something? And the house renovations were totally unnecessary. There also aren’t a whole lot of likeable characters in this novel including the main characters. Jacobia’s ex-husband Victor is expectially obnoxious.
The one thing I did appreciate in Wreck the Halls is Graves’ attempts to bring the trials of the real town of Eastport to notice. This town was once a major seaport, although not anymore. What killed off the fishing industry were large factory boats which “were vacuuming cod by the metric ton out from under the smaller vessels, processing and freezing them aboard, too, faster than even a species that produces its offspring by spawning could match. When the fish were gone, the factory boats departed, leaving behind wreckage which consisted principally of the absence of codfish.” Sharing the history of Eastport was one of the more interesting aspects of Wreck the Halls.
This novel was much longer than it needed to be and although I can’t say that I’m sorry I read Wreck the Halls, I won’t be reading any other books in this series.
