This is a well written history of physics from Newton to Einstein with an eye toward making a connection to modern quantum theory. It is written for the layperson who has little mathematical background. (The author does display a number of equations but the story does not depend on a deep understanding of the underlying mathematics). The story has lots of twists and turns as Ms. Coopersmith (love that name!) follows the vagaries of science history as the community of natural philosophers struggles to develop and then come to grips with the concept of energy. As a retired physicist, I can attest to the difficulties of understanding (much less explaining) the subtleties of energy. She struggles a bit here and there, but she does a remarkably good job of it. The anecdotes about the various personalities involved in the quest to understand heat and its relationship to other forms of energy are quite entertaining, and do not detract from the overall narrative. Her explanation of the statistical basis for entropy is remarkable for a book for the non-physicist.

The convoluted path of physics history does sometimes make the story hard to follow, but she provides nice summaries at the ends of chapters and an overview at the end of the book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to understand how the development of physics prior to 1900 built the foundation on which quantum theory was built. Or for anyone who wants insight into the modern understanding of the laws of thermodynamics. I found it very enlightening and thought provoking. Besides enjoying seeing the entire history laid out in one book, I even learned a couple of new things.

I want to add a comment on typography. Although the equations are not necessary to understand the story, it was nice to see that most of them were reproduced correctly (which is not always true for eBooks). There were also very few typos (also not always true for eBooks). I did have a couple of problems with some of her comments given as asides, but since they were not essential to the overall story, I decided not to downgrade my rating.
