“A crucial reference for any budget wanderer.”Time

Vagabonding easily remains in my top-10 list of life-changing books. Why? Because one incredible trip, especially a long-term trip, can change your life forever. And Vagabonding teaches you how to travel (and think), not just for one trip, but for the rest of your life.”—Tim Ferriss, from the foreword

“The book is a meditation on the joys of hitting the road. . . . It’s also a primer for those with a case of pent-up wanderlust seeking to live the dream.”USA Today

“I couldn’t put this book down. It’s a whole different ethic of travel. . . . [Rolf Potts’s] practical advice might just convince you to enjoy that open-ended trip of a lifetime.”—Rick Steves

“Potts wants us to wander, to explore, to embrace the unknown, and, finally, to take our own damn time about it. I think this is the most sensible book of travel-related advice ever written.”—Tim Cahill, founding editor of Outside

作者简介

Rolf Potts funded his earliest vagabonding experiences by working as a landscaper and an ESL teacher. He now writes about independent travel for National Geographic Adventure, and his travel essays have appeared in Salon, Condé Nast Traveler, National Geographic Traveler, and Best American Travel Writing 2000, and on National Public Radio.

平均5.0 星 Awesome Read, Very Inspiring 2014年6月10日

If you're interested in how to take trips longer than two weeks in an affordable way, this book is for you. It's a really interesting read on how to make traveling part of your lifestyle instead of just trying to fit it in whenever you have some vacation available. This book opened my eyes up to the many resources available for cheap travel and how to make long term travel a reality not just materially and financially, but also mentally. All around great book and is still just about as relevant in 2014 as it was in 2004. The sites and things like that of course will change, but the general principles and mindset is timeless.

平均4.0 星 A good primer for those interested in long-term travel 2014年4月24日

This is a pretty simple book, designed for those who have never traveled but always wanted to. By "travel" I'm referring to long-term, low-budget travel. This is definitely not intended for the independently wealthy or those who don't know how to function without all of the conveniences of home. Nor is meant for the person who has a couple of weeks off of work and just wants to get out of town. There are plenty of other books for people interested in those types of travel.

The author describes several different approaches to travel and refrains from passing judgment on any of them. He lays out the pros and cons of each style and lets you decide what's right for you. He provides dozens of resources and is continually adding to them on his website. Somehow, he passes on all of this information without making the book feel like a typical travel book.

I took six months off after college and traveled around the U.S. with my then-toddler son. Sustained travel can be difficult even in this country. When my son graduates high school, I plan to try long-term international travel. This book was a great jumping off point for me. I was surprisingly impressed.

平均4.0 星 A great resource for getting into that frame of mind. 2010年3月30日

I bought this book and I'm about halfway through and loving it! This definitely isn't an in-depth approach to traveling long-term so don't buy it thinking it is. It does, however, get you thinking in the right frame of mind in regards to long-term travel. It's basically a philosophical approach to the concept/idea of traveling abroad. The quotes littered throughout are perfect anecdotes to go along with the passages in each chapter. And all the resources are great to get you started with planning on your own. The only reason I gave this 4 stars was because by the time I started reading this, I realized I knew a lot of the info already from years of research into my own trip. But it's definitely worthy of your time and money if you find you need a little push to get you started.
