商品描述

The Whip is inspired by the true story of a woman, Charlotte "Charley" Parkhurst (1812-1879) who lived most of her extraordinary life as a man. As a young woman in Rhode Island, she fell in love and had a child. Her husband was lynched and her baby killed. The destruction of her family drove her west to California, dressed as a man, to track down the murder. Charley became a renowned stagecoach driver. She killed a famous outlaw, had a secret love affair, and lived with a housekeeper who, unaware of her true sex, fell in love with her. Charley was the first woman to vote in America (as a man). Her grave lies in Watsonville, California.

The Whip is based on the unique tale of Charlotte "Charley" Parkhurst, stage coach driver extraordinaire, who lived most of her life in the Old West disguised as a man. It's a quick, action-packed read written with careful attention to historical detail. A great choice for book clubs - particularly those that appreciate stories about strong women! Our group also enjoyed a live video chat with the author, and gained even more insight into this wonderful novel. Bravo to Charley, for a life well-lived, and to Karen Kondazian for penning this keen and insightful exploration of the human spirit!

An excellent and easy read, this story takes you through the imagined but historically supported life of Charley Parkhurst, one who lived life boldly despite grief and horrific loss, irrational gender expectation, and the harsh and unrelenting limits of her society.

I enjoyed reading this, and was disappointed that I could not find more information on the life of Charley Parkhurst. The author did a great job bringing her to life.

A very interesting story and one I, and most avid readers, probably have never heard or read about when thinking of the old west. Surprised a movie has not been made about this person. A woman stage coach drive reportedly one of the best, from a orphan raise in a New England orphanage. Lead me to read about Charlotte/Charley on Wikipedia. Would encourage anyone to read the book - man and women - as I am sure it has a different meaning to each gender.
