商品描述

The Whip is inspired by the true story of a woman, Charlotte "Charley" Parkhurst (1812-1879) who lived most of her extraordinary life as a man. As a young woman in Rhode Island, she fell in love and had a child. Her husband was lynched and her baby killed. The destruction of her family drove her west to California, dressed as a man, to track down the murder. Charley became a renowned stagecoach driver. She killed a famous outlaw, had a secret love affair, and lived with a housekeeper who, unaware of her true sex, fell in love with her. Charley was the first woman to vote in America (as a man). Her grave lies in Watsonville, California.

平均5.0 星 Fantastic, well written story! 2016年11月20日

Wow, what a great, sit on the edge of your seat read! So many hardships faced by Charley yet she's able to create a great life for herself, coming out triumphant! No medication, or therapy in those days and Charley is an amazing person who is able to move forward, be resourceful and transform herself! The author wrote such a wonderful story, so fun to read, so heartbreaking at times but ultimately, Charley was amazing and it was a great read, one of the best I've read.

平均5.0 星 ... Book Club to read The Whip because it was recommended by my Dentist 2016年4月30日

It was my suggestion for our Book Club to read The Whip because it was recommended by my Dentist. I could not put the book down, wanted to see what would happen to first Charlotte and then later Charley on each page! Living in the area of Placerville and coming from the Bay Area adds to the enjoyment of the book. I thought the research that Karen put into this story was remarkable, what is coming next? Hopefully another wonderful story soon!! To other Book Clubs out there, pick this book for your group, you will certainly enjoy the experiences that Charlotte/Charley has each day.

I like the way the author ventured into Charley's brain to discover her motivation for the things that she did. And then she exposed Charlie's coming to terms with the things she did and the way she lived. I was easily drawn in to the story and experienced it as though they were my own experiences. I would absolutely recommend the book to adult readers (rate M for mature audiences.)

I thought that was a terrific book. The author made you feel you Knew Charley. She skillfully built her character with her sorrowful beginning as an orphan and how she finally accepted herself playing out being a man to the end,
not realuzing she was was transgender. Loved her lingo and capturing the essence of the rough life of a western cowboy. Can hardly wait for the movie. Ritas read
