商品描述

The Whip is inspired by the true story of a woman, Charlotte "Charley" Parkhurst (1812-1879) who lived most of her extraordinary life as a man. As a young woman in Rhode Island, she fell in love and had a child. Her husband was lynched and her baby killed. The destruction of her family drove her west to California, dressed as a man, to track down the murder. Charley became a renowned stagecoach driver. She killed a famous outlaw, had a secret love affair, and lived with a housekeeper who, unaware of her true sex, fell in love with her. Charley was the first woman to vote in America (as a man). Her grave lies in Watsonville, California.

平均5.0 星 Made we wonder about others 2016年7月9日

I enjoyed this read. It was something different, and for me the story flowed well. It is only vaguely based on a real character, as much isn't know of the real person. But I enjoyed the author's thoughts of what may have taken place to get Charley to the place where she was living this life. It did get me thinking about real lives that were lived this way for probably many more women than we know. Being a women in those times and especially in the 'wild' west was hazardous! Basically two choices...wife or prostitute. Would be so interesting to know about the real Charley and how she got to where she did driving a stagecoach. But since there are no records or journals of her left behind we can only guess. And this author did a pretty good job of it.

I picked this book for our book club and it was a hit! Everyone enjoyed reading it. We had a great discussion. Karen Kondazian was even a part of our conversation through face time. She answered questions and gave background into why she wrote the book and her research. I would like to recommend The Whip to everyone!

Such a great twist. Absolutely loved the adventure. Brought every emotion to the surface. Makes you wonder how some people survived the old times. A great read. Moves fast. Makes you angry, sorrowful, happy, sad, hopeful, and wondering how some people lived through the predujice and lack of acceptance that was a part of our past. Don't pass this one up!

平均5.0 星 Fantastic, well written story! 2016年11月20日

Wow, what a great, sit on the edge of your seat read! So many hardships faced by Charley yet she's able to create a great life for herself, coming out triumphant! No medication, or therapy in those days and Charley is an amazing person who is able to move forward, be resourceful and transform herself! The author wrote such a wonderful story, so fun to read, so heartbreaking at times but ultimately, Charley was amazing and it was a great read, one of the best I've read.

平均4.0 星 Good choice for book club 2016年11月9日

This was really an interesting and unexpected story which I thoroughly enjoyed! The only warning I'll toss out is that sometimes the language and action is quite rough, so this may not be the best choice for young readers. It has some anchor in historical events which I had very little knowledge of, so I think I learned something about the Gold Rush and stagecoaching in the reading of this book. I highly recommend it, especially for book clubs!
