Product Description
This Companion provides a fresh and comprehensive account of this outstanding work, which remains among the most frequently read works of Greek philosophy, indeed of Classical antiquity in general. The sixteen essays, by authors who represent various academic disciplines, bring a spectrum of interpretive approaches to bear in order to aid the understanding of a wide-ranging audience, from first-time readers of the Republic who require guidance, to more experienced readers who wish to explore contemporary currents in the work’s interpretation. The three initial chapters address aspects of the work as a whole. They are followed by essays that match closely the sequence in which topics are presented in the ten books of the Republic. Since the Republic returns frequently to the same topics by different routes, so do the authors of this volume, who provide the readers with divergent yet complementary perspectives by which to appreciate the Republic’s principal concerns.

Before I begin, I admit that I did my graduate work in English and not Classics, and therefore my knowledge of Greek and Latin texts is dilettantish at best. However, this collection helped me separate some of the competing arguments in the scholarly discussion surrounding The Republic. Of particular interest to me was the essay by O'Connor ("Rewriting the Poets in Plato's Characters") and the essay titled "Wise Guys in Parts 1 and 2 of the Republic" (my titles are approximate). These essays seemed to be more interested in The Republic as a literary text, with characters that could be analyzed, in order to deepen one's understanding of not only the philosophical thrust of the text but also its narrative progression, which is truly quite fascinating.

Part of my disappointment in general with Cambridge Companions is the fact that they rarely contain enough depth for the serious student, and instead provide a breadth of popular approaches written by today's sexiest and trendiest professors. Barf. I think Cambridge Companions would be more helpful if they centered around individual works. Possible? Probably not, but I would at least like to see a "Cambridge Companion to the Faerie Queene" and a "Cambridge Companion to The Prelude," for instance. Cambridge Companion to "King Lear," anyone? This Companion sated my desire for a single volume of reputable criticism concerning one work, which greatly facilitated the process of putting articles into conversation with one another. Highly recommended.
