A compelling story of the longest day in a fourteen-year-olds life. -- Publishers Weekly
I really think this book is a heartbreaking story. It`s like finding gold and you don`t know what to do with it. The plot is outstanding, the characters have great personalities. This book may not be funny, but everyone that reads this book can relate to the story. The reason I loved The Summer of the Swans by Betsy Byars is because of the ending. The ending will take you from being very sad to very happy. The book The Summer of the Swans will make you want to cry.
The book had some interesting people like Charlie, who is mentally challenged and is stubborn, too! Charlie likes to do what he wants, when he wants to do it. Charlie has a sister named Sara and another sister named Wanda. Sara is a teenage drama queen who thinks everything is wrong with her. She also thinks that she is ugly, but I think she only says that because her sister Wanda isn't. Wanda is a caring girl who tries to convince Sarah that she isn't ugly and that she shouldn't be mad at herself because she doesn't look like Wanda. Wanda sometimes leaves Aunt Willie to handle the children, so Wanda can hang out with Frank, her boyfriend. Aunt Willie is Wanda, Charlie, and Sarah's overprotective guardian who needs to know where the kids are all the time. It seems like Aunt Willie likes to worry about these kids, for she does way too much. Joe Melby was also in the story. Joe and Sara didn't get along, that is until Charlie got lost. Joe Melby was accused of stealing Charlie's watch, but he was proved innocent. Sara hated Joe Melby for "stealing" Charlie's watch, but after she finds out the truth, Joe forgives her for jumping to a conclusion. Joe Melby is a forgiving person.
The book is mostly about Charlie and Sara going to see the swans in the middle of summer. Charlie loved the swans. When it was time to leave, he didn't want to leave, but he did. During that night he woke up, convinced that he saw the swan outside, so he followed the "swan" back to the lake. Disappointed to find that the "swan" was really just a cat, he was scared, and lost his way home. You have to read the book to find out what happens after that.
The book wasn't a good book, but it taught a great lesson. The lesson was that you shouldn't judge a book by its cover. I know this because Sara shouldn't have judged Joe Melby just because she heard that he stole Charlie's watch, when really didn't. Also, if you judge someone before you know him or her, you could miss out on a good person, or in Sara's case, a great friend. If I influenced you to read this book, great! You should!
This book was good because it teaches many lessons. It tells what may happen in real life. The book has many problems and describes what Sara dislikes about herself. This book tells how some people are. It also tells about the characters and, it makes you understand what is happening to them. I like how the author describes Sara the best. The book is about a kid in the summer that is feeling terrible about herself, and she feels like she is the only one watching out for her brother, Charlie. Betsy Byars wrote a great book, about The Summer of the Swans, and another name for book could be Charlie's Life.
This story starts out with Wanda and Aunt Willie fighting. This story was made to teach lessons to kids and adults. The plot of the story is not to make fun of people, and never judge people. Charlie is a boy who is mentally challenged. He needs help to get through the day. He has no friends and can't talk. Charlie has a watch that he got for his birthday from his sister, Wanda. Charlie can't tell time, but he loves to listen to it and when people ask him what time it is, he just shows them the watch. Sara is Charlie's older sister and she is the middle child. Sara is one of the main characters. She feels ugly and thinks that nobody likes her. She also feels like she is the only one that takes care if Charlie. Sara hates her orange tennis that she has because it makes her look like she is a duck with big orange feet.
This book teaches many lessons. One lesson is to never judge people for taking things unless you are certain they did it. Sara judged Joe Melby for taking Charlie's watch although he kept saying that he found it on the floor of the bus and it did not have anything to do with the stolen watch. Soon, Sara found out from a friend that Joe did not steal the watch. Sara's Aunt Willie went to Joe's house and told Joe's mother that he had stolen Charlie's watch. Joe came in and told them that he had not stolen it, but was returning it instead. Sara felt really bad because of that. I think this book would be good for ages eleven and up. This book is amazing, and I think you should read it.
