REVIEWS OF THE FIRST EDITION "Humorous, insightful and a pleasure to read. Nawal Nasrallah blends recipes, culinary history, folklore, personal stories and art in a lively mix. Her recipes are precise and easy to follow, with tips and observations derived from her long experience with Iraqi cuisine. Highly recommended." PAULA WOLFERT, author of the award-winning Cooking of the Eastern Mediterranean "This cookbook is more than an introduction to Iraqi cuisine. It is in fact an introduction to Arab cooking in general, researched with the kind of depth not seen before in a cookbook of the Arab world and Middle East." CLIFFORD A. WRIGHT, winner of the James Beard/KitchenAid Cookbook of the Year and the Beard Award for Best Writing on Food for A Mediterranean Feast "A monument to energy, knowledge and enthusiasm. It is an account of origins and development as well as of the complex ethnic make-up of present-day Iraq." TOM JAINE, Petits Propos Culinaires "A project of meticulous and thorough research. Not only Iraqis will be proud of Nawal's achievement in presenting information, known in the main only to specialized Assyriologists and anthropologists, in such an accessible and easy-to-read volume." MARGARET OBANK, Banipal "A culinary odyssey through 8,000 years of Mesopotamian culture and some of the world's oldest recipes, preserved on 3,700-year old cuneiform tablets." RALPH BLUMENTHAL, New York Times "There are over 400 recipes, and the ones I have tried are wonderful. But although the recipes are in a way the main point of a cookbook, in another way they are here a mere vehicle for the stories, the food lore, the proverbs, the poetry, the word play and the sociological tidbits that Nasrallah has to share." CHRISTINE BARBOUR, Herald Times, Bloomington, Indiana

平均3.0 星 Excellent recipes but poor book presentation 2014年8月19日

This book is great. I bought it's first edition in 2003 and we used it a lot. The previous edition was a bulky soft cover and printed on brown paper. Being from Iraq meant that we didn't need pictures but I can understand the complaints about the lack of photos which is a drawback for those who have not seen the meals.
I bought this book with the expectation that the second edition will bring with it improvement in the paper, colored photos and the general organisation of the book. I was mistaken. Yes the new edition is not as bulky and it is hard cover printed on glossy paper with colored photos here and there. However, the smaller font size and the quality of the print meant it is difficult to follow the recipes. The colored boxes are difficult to read due to their bright colors. The main problem however, lies in the absence of reference pages to the within chapter contents at the beginning of each chapter which used to exist in the previous edition. This means every time you are looking for a recipe, you have to go the index which has a very small size font.
I still think the book provides one of the most resourceful information on the cooking in Iraq. By simply following the recipes, you will be able to cook many authentic tasted meals.

Kind of a pricey cookbook, but worth every penny! My boyfriend is from Iraq and I wanted to be able to make him some of the foods he loves from home. I don't read Arabic though. I showed him this book when I received it and he was so happy he almost cried. The recipes are just like how his mom and sisters make the dishes. And I really like that they give some history with each set of recipes. It helps me get to know more about where he grew up. I'm very happy I bought this cook book.

I have owned the paperback version of this book for many years and it is by far the best Iraqi, and indeed Middle Eastern, cookbook I have come across. Head and shoulders above other, better known and advertised Middle Eastern cookbooks. The recipes are authentic and work very well in a standard American kitchen. I owe to it many delicious meals including flat bread, stews, and jams. In addition it makes for very entertaining reading as it goes over Iraqi food customs and culinary history. The depth of scholarship is amazing: I have not seen anything quite like it in any other cookbook - Eastern or Western. Glad to see that it is coming out in a hardcover edition and getting some of the attention it deserves.

Recently started a relationship with an Iraqi man, and wanted him to feel at home here in the U.S. Every recipe we have tried so far has been GREAT!!!! Even the stuff I look at and think 'boring' is great. The stories and anecdotes that are included have given us a chance to talk about traditions in his country, too, and have led to some really insightful discussions.

My only complaint is that I cannot seem to get my samoon to come out right, no matter what I try. But that's probably the oven, definitely not the recipe.

This is a wonderful book with really fun, easy food to try. We are having a great time with it.

I received this book as a gift from my husband, I love to cook divers types of cuisine. This book has history and instruction suitable for our times, it is great. I have gone to Iraq lots of time and have enjoyed the flavors and people's traditions, such a variety , which this book expresses in an easy manner, bringing alive the riches of the customs of the many divers cultures; what we have lost these days with so many mutilating wars. Disruptions that have almost annihilated this rich traditions so for now we have to enjoyed the past by reading about it, in great books like this one. My appreciation to the author and her team who brought this book to be. G. Kadri
