平均5.0 星 Frustratingly Fun and Addictive ... 2015年1月8日

The Perplexus Rookie is a big hit in our house and once my 8 year old daughter mastered it, I was eager to get her the next puzzle on the difficulty ladder: the ORIGINAL PERPLEXUS. The "Original" proved to be the perfect challenge for her (and me as well).

WHAT IT IS:

- This is the one that started the Perplexus series. A clear plastic sphere with a plastic "jungle gym" of 100 obstacles. The goal is to guide a ball bearing through the maze of obstacles by tilting, tapping, turning and even shoving the sphere without knocking the ball bearing off course.

WHAT SEPARATES IT FROM THE ROOKIE PERPLEXUS:

- First of all, this obstacle course is less forgiving than the Rookie ... not only are there more obstacles (some 20 more), many of them leave little room for error. Everything is stepped-up a notch: retaining walls are shallow (so controlling the speed of the ball bearing is critical) and the obstacles are really cool.

- The obstacles are definitely more challenging and require not only a more delicate handling and balancing of the sphere, but even new "moves" are needed to guide the ball ... one particular obstacle (I believe it's #30) actually required a quick shove or shirk to move the ball quickly across a short distance. Additionally, the suspended "track" obstacles that were so fun in the Rookie are back, but they are tighter, with sharper turns and narrower tracks.

- There are 3 starting points located in the same area: one that put you at obstacle #1 and two more that puts you at obstacles further into the maze. This allows you to practice some of the more difficult obstacles without having to start from the very beginning if you drop the ball (the "Rookie" only has one starting point).

- Two obstacles that actually move: a swinging arm and a bucket that flips.

MY BIGGEST FRUSTRATION WITH ALL PERPLEXUS PUZZLES:

- Like the Rookie, the maze obstacle numbers and direction arrows are simply engraved into the colored plastic and can be difficult to see at times (especially considering the glare that a light source can generate on the sphere). I really wish the company would color the engraved numbers and arrows in black or some other contrasting color.

- Another annoying issue is that a rather large Perplesus logo is impessed into the sphere ... twice. Neither my Rookie nor Epic have this issue. I find it rather annoying that the designer/manufacturer would/could do something as ridiculous as impede the critical element of clearly seeing the ball bearing with such a marketing ploy ... totally unnecessary and wrong.

The smaller, more forgiving Rookie certainly served as good prep for this Perplexus (especially for kids), but it is not really a necessary step. Figuring out what to do with the ORIGINAL PERPLEXUS isn't the problem, the real challenge is being consistent, patient and controlling the ball bearing's speed. It is much easier for the ball to fall and that kicks the frustration factor into full gear ... the good thing is that the multiple starting points keeps you from starting all over again if one of the later obstacles becomes particularly troublesome. This Perplexus is a lot of fun and after a few days, I stepped up and purchased the PERPLEXUS EPIC ... that one's a real monster.

平均5.0 星 Interesting 3-D game is just too "perplexing" for our grandson right now... probably should have held off a bit 2015年1月16日

Sometimes I wonder if I live in a perpetual state of having my head in the sand... this 3-D game has been around for 14 or 15 years, and I'm just now discovering it? C'mon, Grandma! Apparently one good thing about only finding it recently is that they've addressed several "glitches", but I have to say... we purchased this as one of our oldest grandson's Christmas gifts (he'll be 7 in April), and it's amazing to hear from some of the reviews that kids as young as 3 are able to play this. The recommended age is 8+, so I realize we purchased this a year "too soon", but our grandson's always been a bit beyond his age in terms of skill, so we wanted to provide a fun challenge for him.

Unfortunately, my son (his dad) is the one logging the playing time with this toy and loves it, but it requires a level of dexterity that my grandson hasn't achieved yet that would keep him interested for any length of time right now... he just gets too frustrated. I know frustration is part of the attraction (as it was with Rubik's Cube), but I wish we would've waited on this one for a couple more years and I hope we haven't turned him against it completely. Hopefully as he continues seeing his dad play with it, he'll keep giving it a try every now and then... so many times with games like this, once you're able to have a couple of successes, it motivates you to try to better your last attempt. We sure hope so... if nothing else, my son got a "bonus gift" this year, and our going-on-3 year old grandson has been using it as an interesting looking bowling ball as well!

July 2016 update: Well, it just took a little more time... this has become one of our oldest grandson's favorite little games over the past year and a half! He's getting pretty good at it, and likes to challenge his dad now. I think the age recommendation turned out to be spot-on in our case!

平均5.0 星 perfect for all ages! 2012年12月18日

There's three of us ranging in age from 7-45 and ever since the Perplexus arrived in our house (gift from grandma) we've all been obsessed. At first I didn't understand how there could be three different mazes each made up of 100 levels, but it's actually true. And it's addictive. At first it seems pretty straight forward- the little metal ball clicks into a track, and then you guide that ball through the maze by spinning and turning the entire Perplexus. But there's a lot of little "challenges" along the way and keeping that ball in track is NOT easy.

The thing I love the most about Perplexus is that even though it's currently competing with a brand new Wii U, all of us STILL pick it up constantly and play with it. We leave it on the coffee table and it's constantly in use. I can see getting these as gifts for both family members AND ourselves. Just a great toy with wide appeal. I HIGHLY recommend it.

平均5.0 星 A mazing challenge for kids and adults alike 2015年1月5日

This maze is a little more lightly-constructed and lacking the electronics of the one I remember playing with a few years back. That takes nothing away from the playability and construction of this challenging maze (but does take more than a few bucks off the price. This puzzle is great for developing spatial awareness, a little patience and steadying the hand. Great for anyone who enjoys a challenge and downright frustrating for those who do not. The maze has three entry points at regular intervals along the track so that the maze can be solved one-third at a time before you reach the Zen Master level and complete it in one go. A quick tip for the frustrated mazer - it's easy standing up.

I bought this as a toy that all of us would enjoy using (niece @ 12, nephew @ 4, and myself @ 30). This really fit that bill. We took turns passing the game around whenever anyone would drop the ball out of the maze. Though my niece lost interest after an hour or so, my nephew and I played for several hours straight. When the maze was put away, I found my niece had dragged it back out to play it in private. This was engaging and fun for us all.

The only real problem is the durability. I don't know why the maze kept finding its way to the floor (kids!), but the outside clear plastic began to get scratched. Eventually the ball took a tumble and someone put too much pressure on it such that the clear plastic shell pushed in breaking the maze inside.

I still recommend this toy. It is fun for all and inexpensive too. I just recommend you play with it over carpet.
