This book was misleading. This is a very basic overview of the sqlite database and provides very little supporting andriod specific context.

平均5.0 星 A compact but complete enough presentation about how to use the SQLite database on Android 2014年11月15日
评论者 Alain Couniot - 已在美国亚马逊上发表
版本: Kindle电子书
As most books in PacktPub's Essentials series, "Android SQLite Essentials" is fairly short: 127 pages in 4 chapters. Nevertheless, the authors have managed to cover the topic in a complete way.

Chapter 1 provides a (maybe too) progressive introduction to SQL databases and to SQLite in particular, highlighting its peculiarities (embedded nature, dynamic typing). Chapter 2 mostly deals with database handlers and queries. It also addresses the binding of database data with Android UI elements, in a first approach. Chapter 3 goes further by exposing the mechanisms provided by Android to support data sharing between applications, taking security constraints into account. Android Content Providers are presented in a very detailed way, along with practical hints and best practices. Chapter 4 addresses yet more advanced topics such as using background data loading (CursorLoader), further considerations about data security (permissions, encryption), database upgrades (schema versioning), and shipping of pre-populated databases. In passing, the authors also explain some Android mechanisms of particular interests, such as menuInflaters. Testing mechanisms are also (briefly) addressed.

The authors provide many source code examples, as snippets of reasonable length that don't give the feeling that they "stuff" the book. Detailed enough explanations accompany the snippets.

This book makes for an interesting and pleasing reading that is highly recommended to any developer needing a robust SQL database with a reasonable footprint on Android.

平均5.0 星 A very nice book for working with SQLite in Android (and not) 2014年11月26日

In every Android (and not) application what makes the difference is the information the appplication could transfer or give. In other words, data. Databases are the heart of applications (both locally managed or server sided). Google, Yahoo, Facebook, manage a lot of information and data using databases to store, retrieve, query and search the particular information you need. In an Android device, SQLite is the engine feeding every database-centric application.

The book by Sunny Kumar Aditya and Vikash Kumar Karn gives a very detailed and exhaustive description of several techniques that could be used with Android SQLite databases. First two chapters are unproductive and give the reader all the basic knowledge to start working with SQLite in an Android application. Several best practices are explained as well, bringing the reader to the third chapter, where the Content Provider is described. This is the powerful engine enabling application to connect in an abstract way to a database, sharing information between applications and so on. In the end, the last chapter explains loaders and security issues.

The book is written in a simple and concise way. It is really simple to be read and the examples provided with the book are useful and well suited for the book. A must for every Android (and not) developer who wants to be introduced to the database world...
平均4.0 星 Good for Intermediate to Advanced Android SQLite Developers 2014年11月28日

Android is a widely advertised and used operating system. It is found in many smart (and not so smart) devices. Soon it will be instrumental in moving the Internet of Things technologies forward. "Android SQLLite Essentials" is a good reference and walk though for Android programmers interested in SQLite database-based Android applications. The 4 chapters are understandable to intermediate to advanced Android developers. To make this book more readable to beginner developers more screen-shots and a little more step-by-step guiding would be ideal. Chapter 1 covers the SQLite architecture and other SQLite basics including how to connect to Android. Chapter 2 discusses how to use the database in Android views, it discusses some ideal techniques to use and the authors take you through the process of set-up up a database manager which is actually pretty cool. Chapter 3 discusses content providers and issues surrounding the techniques to create and interact with them. Lastly, in chapter 4 covers several other advanced topics from data security to content loaders. Some nice examples are given and they talk about some good SQL tips. I would recommend this book to Android developers who need to interact with SQLite databases: http://bit.ly/1ohtDqr

平均5.0 星 Wonderfully covers all aspects of SQLite in Android 2014年11月22日

This is an excellent book explaining everything you need to know about using SQLite with Android. Starting with the basics of configuring SQLite to be used in Android, the book goes on to more complex concepts like updating schemas seamlessly when a user installs a newer version of an app. ORM-lovers like me who can't think of accessing data without ORMs (Object-Relational Mapping) can also benefit from the chapter "Sharing is Caring", as accessing data through Content Providers must be made using a Cursor rather than ORM.

The book is written very eloquently. You can skip and jump to any chapter you like.
