Michael Neill is a genius at expressing something that is relatively simple but can seem complex. His analogies and stories are incredibly helpful and insightful and put this understanding into concrete terms. In the year since I first read this book, I have shared it and the three principles with many people, and their lives have been similarly transformed -- not because of me, but because I simply tapped them on the shoulder and pointed in the direction that Michael Neill first showed me.
This is not a self-help book. It's not a book of techniques. There really is nothing to learn or do. It's a book that will show you something you already know but could never articulate. But being able to see it, to articulate it, changes everything. I threw away every self-help book I owned, stopped reading articles and emails about "10 ways to be happy today" or whatever. I don't need them anymore, and I'll never need them again.
My gratitude is immeasurable. Thank you, Michael, for this beautiful book.
Second time I read the book, my inner life was in turmoil. I was going through a rough patch in my personal relationship. I felt compelled to take action that I knew would make things much worse between me and my spouse. But I just didn't know how I could go on with my life without giving her a piece of my mind. I was dreading the outcome of the steps I was feeling compelled to take.
But as I started reading this book for the second time, I felt a shift inside me. The shift I felt was gradual. It came and went. But I could feel that I was changing. My mindset was changing. Being alive just felt different. Not better. Nor worse. Just different.
What I realized was that all the drama that I am fighting is MY OWN CREATION. Somehow, by thinking that I must give my spouse a piece of my mind I was giving life to that idea. The creative power of consciousness within me was actually creating my reality in a subtle but such a powerful way that I felt compelled to take action.
I WAS REACTING TO THE THOUGHT I EMPOWERED WITH THE CONSCIOUSNESS WITHIN.
The thought above made me feel lighter than I had felt in a long time.
With that said, I feel that this book can make the same life changing difference to others. All that is needed a will to change and an open mind.
There are 3 principles: The Mind (the organizing intelligence behind life that makes an acorn into a tree, the sun rise every morning, the cut on your hand heal by itself and so on). Consciousness (our level of awareness). Thought (how we make sense of reality).
Life basically works this way: Our natural state is one of well-being and equilibrium. When we follow inner wisdom, we generally stay on course and happiness ensues. Feelings of frustration, anger, and other uncomfortable feelings are signals that we are off course. This is a handy-dandy internal compass for navigating your best life. When distress happens, our thoughts are the culprits. Contrary to prevailing belief, it's not what's out there (people, situations) that is creating your experience, it's your thoughts about those people and situations. Once you realize that you are reacting to your thoughts, things actually get easier. This shift in consciousness makes you less interested in trying to control others. Life also becomes less about striving, struggling and figuring things out intellectually. You are a co-pilot, not the sole pilot. Life is better lived by slowing down your mind so that you can hear your inner wisdom, which, if heeded, will lead you in the direction of peace and happiness. The problem with self-empowered people who believe they are solely responsible for making things happen is that life becomes a relentless, exhausting proposition. Neill proposes that we just recognize we are enough as we are. (See Brene Brown's The Gifts of Imperfection for more of the same). Life is a game to play and experience with "joyful indifference." The pressure is off to validate ourselves. If we follow our internal prompts, we may end up somewhere far better than what we could have planned or imagined. This reminds me of Martha Beck who often quotes Yogi Amrit Desai that our job is to "exist in perpetual creative response to whatever is present." This tact allows true humility to shine. It's less about me, the ego, and more about following the internal whispering of The Mind. The Mind (or organizing intelligence) of well-being and equilibrium is our "default setting." Neill makes the point that if we just all understood this, life would be a heck of a lot more enjoyable, creative, rewarding.
Neill sets forth the general "inside out" philosophy in this book but spends little time on the particulars. If you can grasp that thoughts create much of your suffering than you are half way there. But my experience as a life coach indicates that dissolving thoughts isn't always an easy or immediate process. To deepen your understanding, I'd recommend Byron Katie's The Work (Love What Is) and Russ Harris (The Happiness Trap). Deepak Chopra also offers valuable insights about different levels of consciousness (Spiritual Solutions).
