"Author Sherman calls PLAYING WITH SKETCHES "calisthenics for your hands and mind." With this book, she endeavors to expand readers' creativity through play, inviting them to step outside the known, disregard rigid rules they have internalized, and allow themselves to make mistakes. The exercises include back-to-basics and goal-oriented themes, and also more challenging concepts. Simple Lines, Collaborative Patterning, Five-Minute Drawings, Blind Drawing, and Sketch Share are just a few of the exercises offered. Challenge yourself to work through this book and you will really be exercising your creative muscles!"" - ""Barbara Delaney, Cloth Paper Scissors Magazine"

I am an art graduate and author but I am always looking for new books to encourage and progress my drawing. I really liked this book because it provided a range of easy to follow drawing exercises. You do not have to do them in order, and you can perhaps skip over those that aren't of interest. Practice in drawing is essential for anyone who wants to draw well - no matter your credentials, practice makes perfect and there are many exercises that can help here with that practice.

I especially like the tips in the first few pages from other artists and scattered throughout the book, as well as great website suggestions. Take your time to absorb and explore through this title - it is well worth the price.

There are a ton of drawing books out there to stimulate the creative mind, but this is one of the best that I've found. It's not about learning to draw, and the author doesn't provide subject prompts that you have to draw in the book. Which I'm glad of. If I buy a book for $20+, I'm not going to draw in it. Also pleasantly absent: the five obligatory pages introducing art tools and how to use them.

The 50 exercises cover a broad range of things to try and ideas to play with. Art school taught me how to draw, but it didn't teach me how to play or how to apply drawing beyond traditional projects. Sherman breaks some of that creative block by providing projects to explore what it means to draw, paint, collage, ink, or just create in general.

The format of each exercise is straightforward. Lots of good and inspiring work from a broad range of artists and illustrators. Sherman isn't stingy with the eye candy. She also provides good info on why that work applies to the exercise.

Finally, the format of the book is also great for skipping around.

I love this book, full of practical ideas. But notice they are not all about sketches. They are general art/drawing practicing ideas. I borrowed a copy of this book from a library and immediately decided that I need a copy of my own. That's how impressive this book is to me!

Lots of ideas for getting the creative gears turning again. I use some of these exercises for my art students who have a hard time being practically creative in this digital age. I also use it as exercises to help me get started on my own work. It really does have a variety of ways to go about doing or applying drawing

Excellent exercises--help to think outside the box a bit and start a drawing practice.
