平均5.0 星 You've been here....read your way back! 2016年6月16日

That would take an entire page! Absolutely one of my favorite reads. Now reading it again with my adult grandson (who lives in Europe)....on very long distance calls of over 2 hours.....we read paragraphs back and forth...relate our own "Dandelion WIne" summers. Now we're writing our experiences out and placing the pages between the pages that "take us back"....he is so taken by the story ...he has to continually stop reading because his own memory kicks in....as does mine....I return to the "Blueberry Summers" of my youth....and find the time not so long past.

平均5.0 星 So beautiful. 2014年5月28日

This was such a beautifully written book; the word usage was so rich. It's rare that I read a book that I love this much. Ray Bradbury is famous for his science fiction novels, but this story is a semi-autobiographical depiction of a summer experienced by two little boys.

My favorite chapter was when Douglas spies the ultimate pair of tennis shoes in the window on the way home from a movie. The descriptions of the boy's feelings were such that I felt a longing to own the shoes as well. My heart beat so quickly when I experienced the crossing of the ravine with The Lonely One hot on the heels of Miss Lavinia. My heart ached with sadness at the closing pages, when the end of summer is described. This is a book to savored.

"It was then, the mystery of man seizing from the land and the land seizing back, year after year, that drew Douglas, knowing the towns never really won, they merely existed in calm peril, fully accoutered with lawn mower, bug spray and hedge shears, swimming steadily as long as civilization said to swim, but each house ready to sink in green tides, buried forever, when the last man ceased his trowels and mowers shattered to cereal flakes of rust."

"And they left the mellow light of the dandelion wine and went upstairs to carry out the last few rituals of summer, for they felt that now the final day, the final night had come. As the day grew late they realized that for two or three nights now, porches had emptied early of their inhabitants. The air had a different, drier smell and Grandma was talking of hot coffee instead of iced tea; the open, white-flutter-curtained windows were closing in the great bays; cold cuts were giving way to steamed beef. The mosquitos were gone from the porch, and surely when they abandoned the conflict the war with Time was really done, there was nothing for it but that humans also forsake the battleground."

平均5.0 星 From the perspective of age 2014年4月3日

I first read this either in high school or college when I was only a few years older than Douglas although at the time I thought I was much older. I'm now reading for the second time and just six years younger than Mrs. Bentley.

When I read it the first time I was disappointed to realize it wasn't the science fiction novel I expected but thought is nice if a bit dull. Re-reading it decades later I see it is deeper than it appeared back then. To give two examples from the first third of the book: Consider the juxtaposition of the account of Mrs. Bentley with that of Col. Freeleigh. The first account is about leaving the past behind and living with acceptance of ourselves in the present. The second account is about how we are ach connected to the past, how we are our past and the thereby a connection to the future. The next example is the story of the Happiness Machine. It appears to be a homily about finding happiness in the simple pleasures of the family but at the end one may feel that something has been surrendered.

I suggest this book can be read somewhat superficially as a twelve year old boy discovering the world and life one summer in 1928. Intentionally or not Bradbury has more than that beneath the surface, You can also read it alert to possibility that it is not all as it seems; that there might be something more under the surface.

平均5.0 星 Ray's Favorite Book 2013年7月21日

I went to visit Ray and spent an afternoon with him several months before he passed away. I asked him, of all the books and stories that you have written, which is your personal favorite? He replied "Dandelion Wine. It's my favorite. I like it the best, because its the book that has the most of the real me in it."
