Peter's comprehensive view of navigating and administering leadership across the digital landscape is a valuable resource for all students, novices, experts and professionals who are business minded and espouse to a highly profitable, entrepreneurial and capitalistic society. Peter brings 25 years of senior leadership credentials across sales and marketing and injects a level of passion, creativity and critical thinking business principles throughout the book. His expertise as the former CMO of Samsung and Circuit City through his current leadership role at Gen One Ventures comes to bear and shines through every page.
Each chapter builds on the last like a crescendo. I found myself taking copious notes on chapters and leadership principles, some which came naturally to me while others which may seem obvious to some, are in need of reinforcement. For example in chapter 10, Peter lists his 10 key principles for Green Reign Leadership, then in chapter 11 he details his 10 rules to insure competitive dominance that build off of the principles in chapter 10. Each chapter weaves into the next with clarity and focus. Speaking of focus, in chapter 12 he brilliantly intersects great lyrics and words from the classic rock band, The Who, and expands upon the key leadership principles using Who Are You as the theme to demonstrate how important focus and critical thinking is to leadership success. This is serious stuff, but he makes it fun and interesting throughout often referring to great quotes from musicians and leaders from many disciplines to support his point of view and highlight his expertise and vision of effective leadership. I particularly enjoyed the chapters on his ten profitable principles and the ten principles to give back that balance decisions of the heart with decisions of the mind.
Chapter 14 also resonated very clearly and speaks to the disruption that changing technologies have created and how they have impact the retail sector, traditional media such as television, and the exponential growth of smart phones in today's rapidly changing consumer and commerce marketplace. The quote "The Internet is like Darwin on Speed" is appropriately used throughout the book and that quote could become the title for the basis of the sequel as he articulates the mass effect and disruption the Internet has had on business. The last chapter handily condenses many of the diverse quotes from historic leaders he used in previous chapters from Ronald Reagan to Martin Luther King to Confucius to JFK.
Green Reign Leadership is a valuable handbook that is highly relevant, timely and essential reading in today's uncertain and complex business climate and one that strips away the varnish of most other leadership book's with a no-nonsense and direct approach to ensure leadership dominance. I would give this book as gift to my entire sales team, marketing and operations groups, CEO, CFO, Board etc. Its relevance and valuable lessons would resonate with leaders and managers of large, medium and small entrepreneurial companies alike and would make a great gift to that budding college or MBA student. I look forward to reinforcing these timeless principles and recommend that my colleagues adopt them and insure that they become key components of my personal and professional action plan and strategy. Great book!
