为了实施中国文化、中国文学走出去战略，为了扩大中国文学在西方特别是英语世界的影响，为了给世界上其他国家和民族的人提供一个了解中国当代文学的窗口，人民文学杂志特于最近推出了英文版试刊号《PATHLIGHT》第一集，获得了文学界的广泛好评。英文刊名直译过来是“路灯”的意思，意为指引人们走近中国当代文学。
该试刊共160页，双色印刷，共分为五个栏目：第一个栏目是本期重点推荐，这个栏目介绍了新近第八届茅盾文学奖得主的情况，包括了张炜、刘醒龙、莫言、毕飞宇、刘震云的访谈、自述和作品片段，非常精彩。
第二个栏目介绍了五个新锐作家的短篇小说和非虚构作品，有蒋一谈、七格、笛安、向祚铁的小说以及李娟的非虚构作品，是当代最新最有活力的作家的新作。
第三个栏目是诗人新作栏目，包括了大陆和香港的诗人侯马、西川、雷平阳、宇向、孙磊、王良和等诗人的佳作。
第四个栏目是压卷小说，发表了实力派小说家李洱的短篇小说《斯蒂芬来了》，译笔也很精良。
最后是当代作家作品新书介绍，共介绍了八本新书。
